I'm sure by now everyone knows I coached the men's golf team at UC Berkeley for 4 years. My responsibilties as "coach" included tournament scheduling, protocal for team qualifying, budgets, selection/ordering team uniforms, monitoring academic standing, and most improtant of all-preparing my collegiate golfers to compete.
"Competing" requires numerous skills, from ball striking, putting, sand play, chipping/pitching, poise under fire, course management, physical fitness, practice habits, committment, and of course "Last but not Least" self confidence. "I want, I can, I will!" you need to have all of the above in order to be successful competing at any level. It was my job as head coach to properly develop and prepare my golfers!
There are several things that an individual can do to improve their playing ability, however "playing" tends to be the most effective. It challenges every aspect of the game required to be successful. Unfortunately players can sometimes get comfortable when they play within the same enviroment, same playing partners, and same course set-up. To shake things up I would require my players to play 9 holes from the "Red Tees"(forward) with wedges only. This would force them to practice shots from a different setting and distance. "The Links @ Kiley Ranch," which is an executive 9 hole course (139/yards from the back tees), allows all players to hit shots that are most commonly required the short ones!
Do exactly what my players did alternate your play, mix it up, variety will add to your practice enjoyment and expands your practice habits. One round play from the back tees, next round play from the forward tees. Playing at an executive course, such as Kiley Ranch, will allow you to practice the most critical shots in golf "The Short Ones!!!!!"
